An unforgettable evening at The Monarch San Antonio brought Hispanic heritage to life through breathtaking fashion, artistic expression, and powerful cultural storytelling.
As an Indian American, I feel incredibly blessed to come from such a beautiful, rich cultural heritage. As I started my relationship and life with Adam over a decade ago, I’ve loved learning more about his cultural heritage and traditions as a Hispanic American with strong roots in San Antonio, long before Texas was even a part of the United States.
While our cultures and traditions have plenty of differences, they also share meaningful similarities, especially in how we celebrate life, honor our ancestors, and preserve the stories of those who came before us.
Día de los Muertos, celebrated in Hispanic culture, and Pitru Paksha, observed in Hindu traditions, are two deeply meaningful occasions that take place around this time of year. Although their customs and histories are distinct, both emphasize remembrance, gratitude, and the enduring connection between generations.
That’s part of what made attending iLaCatrina’s Día de los Muertos live experience especially meaningful for us.
We’ve always loved how unique, intricate, and intentional traditional fashion can be across our cultures. From the vibrant textiles and detailed craftsmanship of Indian attire to the elaborate artistry and symbolism woven into Hispanic fashion, clothing can tell stories that extend far beyond aesthetics.
And iLaCatrina took that concept to an entirely different level!
This wasn’t your average fashion show, and it wasn’t just a showcase of pretty fabrics draped over pretty people. It was an immersive, cinematic celebration of heritage, bringing together couture fashion, music, theatrical performances, and visual storytelling in a way that felt both contemporary and deeply rooted in tradition.
With exquisitely handcrafted Catrina designs on accomplished models, the runway became a living canvas for cultural expression.
One of iLaCatrina's most impressive aspects is the intention behind its designs. The creative vision extends beyond producing stunning garments. Each creation draws from history, spirituality, cultural identity, and artistic traditions, transforming fashion into an opportunity to educate, connect, and inspire.
Their signature couture work includes collections such as Mexico Cosmos and Evolution, each exploring different dimensions of the iconic Catrina figure and its cultural significance.
Mexican Cosmos draws upon the mystical history, ancestral roots, and spiritual symbolism associated with Día de los Muertos, while Evolution explores contemporary, avant-garde interpretations of La Catrina through innovative silhouettes and modern elegance.
However, what truly elevated the experience was the storytelling accompanying the designs. Learning about the cultural significance and inspiration behind the artistry adds an entirely new dimension to the runway presentation.
It’s one thing to admire the extraordinary craftsmanship, but it’s another to understand the history and meaning woven into each piece.
As creatives ourselves, we especially appreciated the thoughtful integration of so many artistic disciplines into one cohesive experience. Every element contributed to something greater than the individual performances or designs.
But beyond the production and spectacle, what resonated most with us was the celebration of cultural identity.
Growing up surrounded by different traditions has taught us just how much beauty there is in understanding the stories, symbolism, and values behind them. While the ways we honor our ancestors may look different across our intercultural backgrounds, the love, remembrance, and respect at the heart of these traditions are profoundly similar.
One of the best parts of the night was when the emcee went around to those in attendance to ask who they were honoring and remembering that night. For us, it was Adam’s grandma Lupe, and my big brother Adarsh.
Experiences like this remind us that cultural appreciation goes beyond admiring beautiful clothing, enjoying traditional music, or attending a celebration. It’s about listening, learning, and recognizing the generations of history that give these traditions meaning.
We’re grateful to have experienced iLaCatrina’s incredible artistry right here in San Antonio, a city where so many different cultures and traditions have the opportunity to be celebrated and shared.
The evening was a beautiful reminder that heritage is not something confined to history books or family traditions. It continues to evolve through creativity, artistic expression, and the stories we choose to pass forward.
Shoutout to Hennessy, who sponsored the experience and hosted a special cocktail reception featuring complimentary handcrafted cocktails, and all the other event partners, sponsors, and individuals involved in putting this event together.
