Wherever There Is Faith, Obstacles Become Stepping Stones
Today is Ganesh Chaturthi, a festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha, the Hindu deity who is revered as the remover of obstacles and the god of wisdom, prosperity, and new beginnings. The stories about Ganesha remind us that with faith and perseverance, no challenge is insurmountable if we approach life with humility, clarity, and courage.
Something that might surprise others is that whenever we travel, we try to carve out a quiet moment of peace and often it's at a local place of worship.
Most recently it was at the Malibu Hindu Temple while on a business trip to Los Angeles. We also almost always sit down for a few minutes at St. Patrick's Cathedral when we're in Midtown in New York.
Beyond the beauty and history, there's something powerful in the silence and stillness, especially when you go at a time that feels right for you, rather than during a service.
Growing up Hindu, I've been on many pilgrimages with my family to Hindu temples around the world. Being in an intercultural relationship, I've also shared moments with my partner's family at Catholic churches. As an avid traveler, I've been drawn to historical churches, mosques, and other sacred spaces too.
What I've learned along the way is that every faith has something to teach us. Ultimately, it's usually about being a good person. That's why it's difficult to see religion misused as a guise to do wrong, when at its core, it is meant to guide toward love, compassion, and goodness.
Faith has always been a journey for me; sometimes steady, sometimes uncertain, but in every place of worship, I've found a sense of calm and grounding.
My partner Adam's mom always reminds me 'faith over fear' and it's been a much needed reminder that I've been putting into practice this year more so than ever before and I'm feeling very blessed.
With Summer quickly coming to a close, my favorite seasons of Fall & Winter are quickly approaching and they are arguably the most festive of the year. So many cultures and faiths celebrate during these months, whether it's religious festivals, cultural traditions, or holidays with loves ones. I love how these seasons bring people together in gratitude, reflection, and joy, reminding us there's so much light to be found in community and celebration.
At the heart of it all, these moments remind me that faith and culture are threads that connect us all. I'm grateful for the lessons, the calm, and the light these traditions bring into my life. May we all continue to find wisdom, peace, and strength to turn every obstacle into a stepping stone.
